Residents of Barangay Curuan in Zamboanga City were caught off guard Thursday night when heavy rain caused flash floods that quickly submerged parts of the area. Within just one hour of downpour, floodwaters rose to chest level, forcing some residents to wade through the rushing waters.
By the following morning, residents in Sitio Mina discovered that a flood control structure had collapsed. The riprap wall, which was meant to protect Mina Elementary School, gave way after the flooding.
The incident has fueled anxiety among residents who fear the collapse could endanger students once classes resume. They expressed particular concern that a nearby school building, only a few steps away from the damaged wall, might also be at risk of collapse.
Community members noted that the flood control project was built just over two years ago, yet it has already failed. This has raised doubts among locals about the quality and durability of the construction.
Some residents voiced frustration, saying the collapse highlighted potential flaws in infrastructure projects intended to safeguard vulnerable communities against flooding.
Barangay officials of Curuan have already elevated the matter to the local government unit, requesting immediate action and repairs to prevent further danger.
As of Friday, no injuries were reported, but fears remain high over the safety of students and the long-term stability of school facilities in the area. The local government has yet to release an official statement on the incident. | Noning Antonio
