President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. reaffirmed the Philippines’ support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity on Wednesday as Russia’s invasion of Kyiv entered its 1,000th day.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Marcos emphasized the Philippines’ hope for a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in Ukraine. He recalled his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy at Malacañang on June 3, where he underscored the Philippines’ commitment to Ukraine as a valued partner.
“Yesterday marked the 1,000th day since the war in Ukraine began,” Marcos wrote. “In my meeting with President Zelenskiy, I reiterated the Philippines’ unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity.”
Zelenskiy Rejects Sovereignty Trade-Off
On the same day, President Zelenskiy addressed Ukraine’s parliament, vowing not to trade sovereignty or relinquish any territorial claims, according to Reuters. The Ukrainian leader also ruled out holding new elections until peace is achieved.
“At this stage of the war, it is being decided who will prevail—whether us over the enemy, or the enemy over us Ukrainians, Europeans, and everyone in the world who wants to live freely and not be subject to a dictator,” Zelenskiy declared.
He also laid out a domestic “Resilience Plan,” positioning it as a counterpoint to the “Victory Plan” he had pitched to Western allies earlier in the year. Zelenskiy stressed that internal unity would play a critical role in compelling Russia to engage in meaningful negotiations.
Philippines Strengthens Ties With Ukraine
Marcos’ remarks highlight the Philippines’ ongoing efforts to build stronger ties with Ukraine, despite geographic distance and differing regional priorities. Marcos emphasized that the country’s relationship with Ukraine continues to grow stronger, reflecting shared values of sovereignty and resistance to aggression.
As the war presses on, both nations are reinforcing their stance against authoritarianism, with the Philippines joining global calls for an end to hostilities that uphold Ukraine’s territorial rights.
