President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to hold accountable and blacklist contractors involved in substandard and questionable flood control projects nationwide.
The directive came after Marcos inspected several flood control structures in Iloilo City, where he found delays and poor-quality construction.
Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said the president stressed that it is not enough for flood control projects to exist only on paper or to be built but quickly become defective and useless.
Data shows billions of pesos have already been spent on projects intended to reduce damage from typhoons and monsoon rains. However, flooding remains a persistent problem in many parts of the country.
Marcos also instructed the DPWH to identify officials who approved contractors with poor performance records and demand explanations as to why these firms continue to secure major government projects.
The president renewed his call for the public to report irregularities in flood control projects through the online platform sumbongsapangulo.ph, as part of the administration’s campaign against corruption and negligence.
The order underscores the administration’s stance that accountability must be enforced not only among private contractors but also within government offices that approve and oversee public infrastructure projects.
