Makabayan Bloc files house resolution opposing ICC release of ex-President Duterte

The Makabayan Bloc has filed a resolution in the House of Representatives opposing the interim release and repatriation of former President Rodrigo Duterte from the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague.

House Resolution No. 9, introduced by ACT Teachers Rep. Antonio Tinio and Kabataan Rep. Renee Co, calls on Congress to support the pursuit of justice for victims of human rights violations linked to the country’s war on drugs.

The lawmakers pointed out that Duterte and his legal team continue to reject the legitimacy of the ICC proceedings, with claims that he was unlawfully detained. They cited this as a sign that the former president does not accept the authority of the court.

Tinio and Co revealed that Duterte’s defense filed an urgent request for interim release on June 12, citing his old age and other reasons. They also noted that a State Party had reportedly offered to receive Duterte if the request is granted.

The ICC Office of the Prosecutor has since opposed the request, arguing that Duterte must remain in custody to ensure his attendance at trial, avoid disruption of legal proceedings, and prevent the possibility of committing further offenses.

Makabayan said it is crucial for the House to show support for Duterte’s continued detention. The resolution underscores the importance of accountability and the need for the Philippines to stand with the victims of extrajudicial killings under Duterte’s anti-drug campaign.
