LTFRB approves jeepney and bus fare increase

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has approved a fare increase for public utility jeepneys and buses.

The decision came after transport groups filed a petition seeking fare adjustments following a major increase in petroleum prices.

According to the LTFRB, the exact amount of the fare increase will be announced on Tuesday, March 17.

Officials said the fare adjustment is being implemented in response to the impact of rising fuel prices on public transportation operators.

Transport groups previously requested the fare increase after the implementation of a significant oil price hike affecting petroleum products.

The LTFRB said details of the approved adjustment will be released once the official announcement is made.

The agency has not yet disclosed the amount that will be added to existing fares for jeepneys and buses.

Meanwhile, the upcoming announcement will not yet include possible fare adjustments for taxis and UV Express services.

The LTFRB explained that petitions from taxi and UV Express operators were only recently submitted.

Because of this, the requests will still undergo the required review process.

Officials said the petitions must first pass through formal hearings and a nationwide consultation before any decision can be made.

The LTFRB emphasized that fare adjustment petitions follow established procedures before they are approved or implemented.

Authorities said the review process includes evaluating the impact on both transport operators and commuters.

The agency has yet to provide a timeline for when decisions regarding taxi and UV Express fare adjustments will be announced.

The upcoming announcement on March 17 will focus specifically on the approved fare increases for jeepneys and buses.

Transport authorities said further updates will be released once additional petitions complete the required consultation process.
