Renewed lava flows and a surge in seismic activity signaled intensifying unrest at Mayon Volcano over the weekend, with state volcanologists warning of continuing hazards as activity remains elevated.
In its Sunday bulletin on May 3, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported ongoing lava effusion, with flows reaching 3.8 kilometers along Basud Gully, 3.2 kilometers along Bonga Gully, and 1.6 kilometers along Miisi Gully.
Surface activity persisted, including minor strombolian eruptions and short-lived lava fountaining, while a steady crater glow remained visible—indicating sustained magma movement beneath the edifice.
Seismic data showed 32 volcanic earthquakes recorded on Saturday, including 25 tremor episodes lasting from two to 15 minutes. Rockfall activity was frequent, with 284 events logged, alongside 14 pyroclastic density current (PDC) signals. Successive PDCs were observed descending Miisi Gully within the Permanent Danger Zone.
Ashfall was reported over the southwestern slopes, while moderate ash plumes drifted west-northwest.
Alert Level 3 remains in effect, signaling heightened unrest and the possibility of hazardous eruptions.
Phivolcs reiterated its warning for the public to avoid the six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone due to risks of lava flows, rockfalls, pyroclastic currents, and sudden explosions. Lahars may also occur during periods of heavy and prolonged rainfall.
Meanwhile, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines has enforced airspace restrictions around the volcano.
Under Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) B1875/26, aircraft are barred from operating up to 11,000 feet within a six-kilometer radius of Mayon’s summit. CAAP said the restriction is a precaution against volcanic ash and airborne particles that could affect aircraft engines, navigation systems, and overall flight safety.
The agency advised airline operators, pilots, and dispatchers to coordinate with Air Traffic Services and monitor official updates as activity continues.*
