Large sinkhole with blue water discovered in San Juan, Siquijor

A large sinkhole suddenly appeared in a rice field at Sitio Pilapil, Barangay Napô, alarming residents.

Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office personnel quickly arrived, securing the area with yellow barriers to warn residents and prevent possible accidents.

On September 26, municipal personnel returned with barangay officials to reinspect the sinkhole, reinforcing safety measures and monitoring surrounding farmland and homes.

Authorities strongly warned the public against suggestions to develop the sinkhole into a tourist attraction, stressing dangers posed by unstable soil conditions.

San Juan Councilor Rads Leones Tompong described the site as beautiful yet terrifying, comparing its appearance to waterfalls but stressing its danger.

He emphasized the sinkhole’s unpredictable depth and potential expansion, warning residents against approaching the site for photos, sightseeing, or recreational activities.

Mayor Rubilyn Maata Ragay confirmed the local government has started assessments with geologists to determine land safety and agricultural viability in affected areas.

She added that farmers losing farmland due to the sinkhole might receive equivalent compensation or support to preserve their livelihood opportunities.

Local officials conducted house-to-house visits warning nearby residents about possible risks, stressing vigilance and compliance with safety protocols to avoid accidents or injuries.

Authorities reminded the public that while the sinkhole’s blue water may look visually stunning, its instability presents significant threats to community safety.

The site will remain closed until experts complete evaluations, ensuring residents and farmers are protected before authorities decide further actions regarding land use.
