A lawmaker from Negros Occidental’s 1st District has urged local government units (LGUs) in the district to declare Senator Alan Peter Cayetano “persona non grata” over what he described as the senator’s failure to perform his duties as a legislator.
In a social media post on Wednesday, June 3, Representative Julio Ledesma IV criticized Cayetano, calling him a “disgrace to the Senate” and accusing him of downplaying his responsibilities as a lawmaker.
“You are a disgrace to the senate and as a former member of the House,” he said.
“I will urge the LGUs of the 1st District of Negros Occidental to declare you persona non grata. This is my ask of our district and I will get this,” he added.
Ledesma’s statement came amid growing calls for Cayetano’s resignation as Senate president after 11 senators accused him of failing to lead the chamber effectively following two consecutive days without Senate sessions. The minority bloc said the no-shows disrupted legislative work and amounted to a dereliction of duty.
The deadlock was eventually broken after senators opposing Cayetano were able to secure a quorum and elect Senator Win Gatchalan as acting Senate president on Wednesday.*
