The recent death of Christopher Carson, son of late Tonight Show host Johnny Carson, is reigniting a painful family scandal long buried from public view. Now, the talk show icon’s secret granddaughter, Christal, is speaking out about the rejection she faced from both her father and grandfather.
Christopher, 74, passed away earlier this year in Florida. Though the cause of death remains undisclosed, the news has triggered renewed attention toward a shadowy chapter in the Carson family’s history — one involving race, money, and abandonment.
According to a report from GLOBE Magazine, Christal was born out of a ten-year relationship between Christopher and his former girlfriend Tanena Love Green. The romance reportedly ended when Johnny Carson discovered his son’s Black girlfriend was six months pregnant. Sources say Carson demanded that Christopher end the relationship or risk being cut off financially.
A granddaughter ignored by Hollywood royalty
Christopher, who lived on an allowance from his multimillionaire father in Fort Lauderdale, allegedly left Tanena and their unborn daughter under pressure. Although he later complied with court-ordered child support, Christal and her mother struggled for years. At one point, sources say, they relied on public assistance while Johnny Carson lived a life of luxury in Los Angeles.
Now 39 and a mother herself, Christal tells GLOBE she was never welcomed by the Carson family. She reveals that Johnny ignored every card she ever sent him, and she received no inheritance after his death in 2005 — despite the entertainer leaving behind an estimated $450 million estate.
Records show that Carson donated $156 million from his trust to the John W. Carson Foundation for the 2008 tax year. The charity supports a variety of causes, but none of the funds went to Christal or her late mother, Tanena, who tragically died in a house fire in 2021.
A voice that was never heard
In 2010, Tanena told GLOBE that Johnny never made any effort to meet his granddaughter. She believed that if he had, he would have seen her worth.
Christal echoes that sentiment. She says her father never supported her emotionally or financially. She was not even informed of his death and only found out afterward. At the time, she was struggling to repay $15,000 in student loans after earning a psychology degree from the University of Florida.
“My father didn’t look out for me. Why would he if he didn’t help me while he was alive,” Christal said. “I wasn’t even told he passed. I just hope his final days were happy.”
Though Johnny Carson remains a beloved figure in television history, this newly resurfaced family story adds complexity to his legacy.
