House approves ₱200 daily wage hike for private workers

The House of Representatives has approved on third and final reading a proposed ₱200 daily minimum wage increase for workers in the private sector.

The measure seeks to mandate a ₱200 increase in the daily pay of all minimum wage earners, regardless of their employment status or whether they work in the agricultural or non-agricultural sector.

This would mark the first legislated nationwide wage hike in nearly four decades if enacted into law.

Several labor groups welcomed the move, calling it a significant step toward addressing the rising cost of living and stagnant wages. They also emphasized that workers across the country have long been demanding a legislated wage hike.

However, the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) expressed concern about the proposal, warning that it may lead to job losses and increased inflation. The group said that while supporting labor rights, businesses—especially small and medium enterprises—could struggle with the sudden cost hike.
