Horror in Oklahoma: Teen tied to tree for three days as couple sentenced to decades in prison

An Oklahoma judge sentenced a couple to decades in prison after they tied a 15-year-old girl to a tree for three days, a punishment they claimed was necessary because she “could not be trusted.”

Johnny James, 41, pleaded guilty to child abuse and neglect and received a 35-year prison sentence. His girlfriend, Kayla Clark, 42, was sentenced to 30 years after pleading guilty to child neglect and enabling abuse. The ruling, issued Wednesday, ensures that both will serve lengthy terms behind bars.

The victim, now in foster care, delivered a powerful victim impact statement during the sentencing hearing.

Authorities Discover Teen Tied Up for Three Days

Deputies from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home in Vera, Oklahoma, on July 28 after a woman called 911, reporting that a teenager needed urgent medical care.

Authorities arrived to find the girl beside a red shed and a chicken coop, sitting on a piece of carpet. She had a bandage below her knee, multiple lesions on her arms, and was secured with a ratchet-style tie-down strap.

A witness, later identified as the girl’s grandmother, initially denied knowing about the abuse but later admitted she had been too afraid of James to intervene.

When questioned, James immediately confessed, telling deputies he restrained the girl because she was “untrustworthy” and had a habit of lying. He insisted she had only been tied up for “an hour” at a time. However, further investigation revealed she had been bound outdoors for three days.

Couple Blames Teen’s Behavior for Abuse

James defended his actions by claiming he restrained the girl to prevent her from soiling herself inside the house. According to the affidavit, James said, “This was the only option to keep her restrained because he did not know what else to do.”

Clark, however, denied any involvement. She told investigators she had been taking a shower and was unaware the girl had been tied outside. She also claimed she was too “frazzled” to notice the teenager’s condition before leaving for church that morning.

Authorities took the victim to a hospital for treatment. The Oklahoma Department of Human Services placed her and other children in the home under state custody.

Justice Served as Judge Hands Down Lengthy Sentences

During the court proceedings, the judge condemned the couple’s treatment of the girl, emphasizing the severity of their crimes. The prosecution detailed the physical and emotional trauma the victim endured, reinforcing the need for significant prison time.

With James and Clark sentenced to 35 and 30 years, respectively, authorities hope the ruling sends a strong message against child abuse. Meanwhile, the teen now has a chance to rebuild her life away from the horrific conditions she once endured.
