en. Risa Hontiveros said it is still too early to determine whether the opposition would be open to a possible alliance with the camp of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in the 2028 elections.
Hontiveros said discussions among opposition groups remain in the early stages as they continue efforts to consolidate different sectors.
According to the senator, the current focus of the opposition is to unite reform-minded and modernizing forces before considering possible political alignments.
She said their priority is to organize and strengthen their own ranks first before entertaining any offers of cooperation from other political camps.
“At this point, we are still in the early stage where opposition groups, reform-minded forces and modernizing forces are working toward unity,” Hontiveros said.
The senator also denied claims that individuals from the administration or pro-Marcos groups had already approached the united opposition regarding a potential alliance.
She clarified that no such discussions or proposals have been made so far.
Hontiveros also addressed questions raised about her previous appearance in Malacañang.
She explained that her presence at the Palace was due to an invitation to attend the Legislative-Executive Development Advisory Council (LEDAC) meeting.
During the meeting, the senator presented her proposed Anti-OSAEC CSAEM bill.
According to Hontiveros, the measure has since been included among the priority measures under the LEDAC.
The senator emphasized that her participation in the meeting was part of the legislative process and was not connected to any political alliance or negotiations.
Her remarks come amid ongoing political discussions and speculation regarding possible alliances ahead of the 2028 national elections.
For now, Hontiveros reiterated that the opposition remains focused on internal coordination and strengthening its coalition.
She said decisions regarding potential alliances would be considered only after their current efforts to unite various reform-oriented groups are addressed.
