Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez has ordered the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board to take action against taxi and Transport Network Vehicle Service drivers who cancel bookings due to traffic, long destinations or other reasons.
Lopez said drivers must remain responsible and accountable, especially as the holiday season increases passenger demand. He stressed that many commuters suffer from sudden cancellations, which leave them stranded during peak traffic hours and rush periods.
Part of the directive includes the release of a Memorandum Circular prohibiting unnecessary cancellation of confirmed trips. The order will set penalties for drivers who repeatedly cancel rides without valid cause. Lopez said the measure aims to protect passengers and maintain fair service.
TNVS operators will also be required to submit to LTFRB a list of drivers who frequently cancel bookings. The department wants to identify erring drivers and ensure disciplinary action when necessary.
Lopez said public transport plays a key role during the holidays when travel volume is high. The government wants smoother service and fewer reports of drivers refusing passengers due to heavy traffic or far destinations.
The LTFRB has yet to release the specific sanctions, but Lopez emphasized that accountability must be enforced. The agency expects TNVS companies to cooperate, providing data on abusive or negligent drivers.
Transport groups and commuters await the memorandum’s full guidelines. For now, Lopez is calling for stricter monitoring so riders can rely on taxis and TNVS services through the busy holiday season.
