Freddie Aguilar, iconic Filipino singer, dies at 72

Freddie Aguilar, one of the Philippines’ most influential folk musicians, died early Tuesday at the age of 72.

He passed away at the Philippine Heart Center in Quezon City, according to Atty. George Briones, legal counsel for the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP). Briones confirmed Aguilar’s death in an official statement.

Aguilar was known for his iconic songs such as Anak, Bayan Ko, Ipaglalaban Ko, and Magdalena. His music, often rooted in nationalism and social issues, resonated with generations of Filipinos.

Beyond his musical contributions, Aguilar also played a political role. He served as Presidential Adviser on Culture and the Arts under former President Rodrigo Duterte. He was also the national executive vice president of the PFP.

His song Ipaglalaban Ko was notably adapted as the melody for Duterte’s campaign anthem Para sa Tunay na Pagbabago.

Aguilar’s death marks the end of a powerful voice in Filipino music and culture. While many mourn the loss of a legend, his political alignment continues to spark debate among fans and critics.
