Former Abuyog, Leyte Vice Mayor James Bohol and his son, Carlo James Bohol, were found dead in a ravine in Silago, Southern Leyte, on Tuesday, days after they were reported missing.
Authorities said the victims had allegedly been abducted by armed men in Mayorga, Leyte, on June 27.
The Philippine National Police later arrested three suspects in Pasay City in connection with the alleged kidnapping and killings.
Police identified the suspects only by their first names, Kim, Reniel and Mark, all residents of Basey, Samar.
Authorities also recovered a vehicle in Sariaya, Quezon, that is believed to have been used in the crime. The vehicle has been placed under forensic examination.
During a press briefing at Camp Crame, Anti-Kidnapping Group Director Police Brig. Gen. Edwin C. Balles said the three suspects voluntarily admitted their participation in the crime and described their respective roles.
Based on the suspects’ initial statements, investigators believe the kidnapping and killings were planned.
Police said the victims were repeatedly struck with a hard object believed to be a dumbbell before they were stabbed.
Investigators are looking into an alleged unpaid debt involving one of the suspects that was reportedly connected to a cooking oil business as a possible motive for the crime.
Authorities emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing as they continue gathering evidence and verifying all circumstances surrounding the case.
Police have yet to announce whether additional suspects may be involved.
The Anti-Kidnapping Group said forensic examinations and follow-up investigations are continuing as authorities work to establish the full sequence of events and determine all those responsible for the deaths of the former local official and his son.
