A 21-year-old fisherman died after being attacked by a crocodile in Barangay Rio Tuba, Bataraza, Palawan, early Wednesday morning.
The victim, identified as Leonardo Casio, was reportedly mauled while fishing in the mangrove area of the barangay. His remains were later found with severe injuries, including the near detachment of both legs, according to Barangay Captain Arman Gamo.
Authorities believe the crocodile involved is the same animal often seen beneath houses in Sitio Marabahay and Sitio Dalungon. Residents described it as about three meters long and frequently approaching the shoreline.
Casio’s mother, Marina Casio, said her son had traveled from Taytay to Rio Tuba to earn money for their family. She said they never expected his fishing trip to end in tragedy.
The local government of Bataraza has provided financial assistance to the victim’s family for transportation and funeral expenses.
Following the incident, the Barangay Council announced plans to launch a stricter information campaign on safety precautions against wild animals, especially in areas known to be crocodile habitats.
Authorities reminded residents to avoid fishing or wading in mangrove areas during early morning and late evening hours when crocodile activity is more likely.
