Vice President Sara Duterte has declared her readiness to face three impeachment complaints filed against her, expressing confidence that she has not violated any laws.
The complaints, lodged by Catholic priests, religious groups, and lawyers, focus on the use of confidential funds in her office. Duterte, in a firm statement, said she is prepared to defend herself against the allegations.
“I am ready to face these complaints. I’ve already secured legal counsel should this reach an impeachment trial,” she said.
In a surprising twist, former President Rodrigo Duterte, her father, has volunteered to serve as her lawyer. The elder Duterte expressed concern over the cases and pledged to stand by his daughter during the proceedings.
Political observers noted that the former president’s involvement could add weight to the case, sparking debates on the propriety of such familial legal support in high-stakes political cases.
The impeachment complaints are expected to challenge the strength of the Duterte political alliance, known as “Alyansang Digong-Inday,” which has been a dominant force in Philippine politics.
Critics allege irregularities in the use of confidential funds, while Duterte’s supporters maintain that the complaints are politically motivated.
The controversy has placed the vice president under intense public scrutiny, with her political future potentially at stake.
The House of Representatives will now decide whether the impeachment cases have enough merit to proceed to trial.
