EJ Obiena wins Atletang Ayala Pole Vault Challenge

EJ Obiena ruled the inaugural Atletang Ayala World Pole Vault Challenge in Makati City, clearing 5.80 meters and defeating world-class rivals.

The Filipino pole vault star, currently ranked world number seven, thrilled the hometown crowd with his powerful jumps and unwavering confidence throughout competition.

Obiena skipped the opening 5.30 meters, confidently clearing 5.45 meters and 5.60 meters, before soaring over 5.80 meters on second attempt.

French vaulter Thibaut Collet matched Obiena’s 5.80-meter mark but required three attempts, allowing Obiena to win via countback with fewer misses.

Polish competitor Piotr Lisek, another top-ranked international athlete, secured third place after managing a 5.60-meter clearance, unable to match Obiena’s precision and consistency.

The event, officially sanctioned under the World Athletics Continental Tour-Bronze category, ensured results contributed significantly toward athletes’ world rankings and future qualifications.

Organizers highlighted this was the first globally sanctioned pole vault event held in the Philippines, a milestone showcasing the nation’s growing sports presence.

Obiena described the victory as deeply meaningful, emphasizing the pride of performing in front of Filipino fans who celebrated every jump with cheers.

He expressed gratitude to the Ayala Foundation, MVP Sports Foundation, and partners for helping realize his dream of hosting such a competition.

Fans erupted in jubilation at Ayala Triangle Gardens, waving flags, chanting Obiena’s name, and witnessing history made by a Filipino sporting icon.

Obiena attempted higher clearances at 5.85 meters and 5.90 meters but narrowly missed, focusing instead on savoring victory in this historic event.

His win reinforced the Philippines’ emerging prominence in track and field while inspiring young athletes nationwide to pursue excellence and compete internationally with confidence.
