The Department of Health in Region XII recorded 277 new cases of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) from January 1 to March 30, 2026, marking a significant increase compared to the previous quarter.
According to DOH-XII Health Education and Promotion Officer Lea Reformado, the latest figure reflects a 56-percent increase from the 177 cases reported during the last quarter of 2025.
Reformado said the region has observed a steady rise in HIV infections, with males accounting for the majority of newly reported cases.
Data from the health department also showed that individuals aged 25 to 34 years recorded the highest number of infections during the period.
Health authorities likewise expressed concern over reported HIV cases involving individuals aged 15 years old and below.
In response to the increasing number of infections, Reformado urged the public to adopt responsible behavior and take preventive measures against HIV transmission.
She emphasized the importance of maintaining a mutually faithful relationship with one sexual partner as a key strategy in reducing the risk of infection.
According to health officials, having multiple sexual partners increases the possibility of HIV transmission and may place individuals and their partners at risk.
Meanwhile, Lowie, a 25-year-old young professional from General Santos City, expressed support for stronger awareness campaigns to educate more people about HIV prevention.
The Department of Health continues to strengthen HIV testing services, treatment programs, condom-use advocacy, and other prevention initiatives across the region.
Officials hope these efforts will help curb the spread of HIV and encourage more people to seek testing and early treatment.
