German national dies in Mandaue pension house fire

A German senior citizen died after becoming trapped inside a pension house that caught fire along F. Cabahug Street in Barangay Guizo, Mandaue City, Cebu, early Friday morning, May 29.

Authorities said the fire broke out at around 4 a.m. The victim was later found dead inside the establishment. Investigators reported that the body had burn injuries but was not completely consumed by the fire.

Based on the initial investigation, authorities believe the victim may have been attempting to descend from the second floor when he was overcome by thick smoke. Investigators said he may have suffocated and lost consciousness before he could escape the burning building.

Firefighters responded to the scene and worked to contain the blaze. The Bureau of Fire Protection declared the fire under control at 4:52 a.m. before it was fully extinguished at around 5:24 a.m.

Authorities estimated the damage caused by the fire at approximately ₱8.73 million.

Investigators are looking into the cause of the incident. Initial findings suggest the fire may have started in the reception area of the pension house. However, officials emphasized that the exact cause has not yet been determined and remains under investigation.
