DOH: disaster response plans for ‘The Big One’ must be revised

The Department of Health (DOH) believes that disaster response plans for a possible magnitude 7.2 earthquake, or “The Big One,” need to be reviewed and updated.

In a public briefing, Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa said the existing plans are outdated due to numerous changes that have taken place in Metro Manila, including developments in hospitals, since the plans were originally crafted.

Herbosa stressed that the increase in high-rise buildings and condominiums, the lack of open spaces, and the presence of large hospitals are among the key reasons why the plans should be adjusted.

He said it is necessary to assess the structural integrity of establishments, repair old buildings, and ensure that new infrastructure is built according to specifications that can withstand a magnitude 7.2 earthquake.

In addition, the health chief emphasized that adjustments should also be made to “soft preparations,” such as protocols, coordination, and readiness strategies.
