DICT studying verification of social media users

Discussions are ongoing on a proposal to require social media users to register or undergo verification.

The move had previously been questioned by several rights groups.

According to Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Secretary Henry Aguda, meetings with social media companies and other stakeholders are ongoing to ensure that all sides are heard before any policy is implemented.

DICT Undersecretary Sarah Sison added that the first public consultation will be conducted online later this week.

She said the agency is open to hearing concerns and comments from various groups regarding the proposal.

Meanwhile, the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) said that if user registration and verification are implemented, it would be easier to track cybercriminals, or individuals who use online spaces for illicit activities.
