Defensor urges Lacson to invite officials, ex-Marines in flood control probe

Former congressman Mike Defensor has called on Senate President Pro Tempore and Blue Ribbon Committee chair Ping Lacson to invite several individuals to the next hearing on the alleged flood control project anomalies.

Defensor specifically named former Undersecretary Adrian Bersamin and former Department of Education Undersecretary Trygve Olaivar, saying they should be given the opportunity to explain their alleged involvement in the issue.

He also urged the Senate panel to hear the testimonies of 18 former Marines who claim they served as “bagmen” for former Ako Bicol Rep. Zaldy Co. According to Defensor, their statements could contribute to the ongoing investigation into the reported irregularities.

The former lawmaker acknowledged that some of the testimonies may later be retracted. However, he maintained that certain information provided by the individuals remains credible and should still be examined by the committee.

Defensor made the call as the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee continues its inquiry into the alleged anomalies surrounding flood control projects.

The next hearing of the committee has been scheduled for April 14.

The Senate has yet to confirm whether the individuals mentioned will be invited to testify in the upcoming session.

The investigation is part of broader efforts by lawmakers to review the implementation and funding of flood control initiatives, amid allegations of irregularities raised in recent hearings.

Further developments are expected as the committee resumes its proceedings next month.
