Davao City pawnshop heist sparks security concerns, DCPO admits lapses

The Davao City Police Office (DCPO) admitted to security lapses that led to the February 26 robbery of a pawnshop along Ilustre Street, Davao City.

DCPO OIC Chief Col. Hansel Marantan acknowledged shortcomings in police security, which allowed the heist to occur. He also revealed that authorities have identified the financiers behind the criminal group but withheld their full identities, disclosing only the aliases “Ramil” and “Takyo.”

One of the arrested suspects, Johnny Bulawan, claimed the group’s goal was to destabilize Davao City and tarnish the Duterte family’s reputation by exposing security vulnerabilities. However, Marantan emphasized that his role is purely law enforcement, dismissing any political motives.

Further investigation led police to recover a vehicle in Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental, allegedly used by the suspects. Authorities linked the crime to the Tolentino criminal gang, identifying Marvin Beronguis as its leader. Reports also named gang members Jimmy Calo, the suspected driver of the recovered vehicle, as well as Jade Dadang, individuals known as “Jack” and “Rodulfo,” and an unidentified man and woman.
