The Department of Agriculture (DA) is ramping up measures to address the potential effects of El Niño on the agriculture sector.
According to DA Undersecretary for Rice Industry Development Christopher Morales, the agency has already begun early preparations for the expected extreme heat.
A key component of the plan is the assessment of irrigation systems to identify areas that may be affected by water shortages.
The initiative aims to determine locations that may require water allocation adjustments, changes in scheduling, and targeted interventions.
The DA is also strengthening climate risk mapping in coordination with the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) and the Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM).
This effort is intended to guide planning on planting schedules, crop selection, and responses to seasonal changes.
The agency is likewise studying the possible use of cloud seeding in selected areas.
Meanwhile, the DA said the El Niño Task Force has been reactivated to ensure faster coordination and clearer implementation of measures.
The move is focused on improving preparedness and minimizing the impact on farmers and agricultural production.
