Classes suspended in Talaingod schools after tribal ‘pangayaw’ threat

Classes in several schools in Talaingod, Davao del Norte have been suspended due to a reported threat of “pangayaw,” a tribal conflict traditionally associated with disputes among indigenous communities.

The suspension was announced by the local government of Talaingod through the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC).

According to the advisory issued by the MDRRMC, classes have been suspended since Friday, March 6, 2026, in two barangays: Barangay Dagohoy and Barangay Palma Gil.

Local authorities said the suspension was implemented as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and teachers amid ongoing tensions in the area.

Motorists were also advised to temporarily avoid passing through the affected areas due to the continuing security situation.

The advisory followed an incident of pangayaw linked to a land dispute that occurred on March 4 in Sitio Lumbayan, Barangay Dagohoy.

During a meeting among tribal leaders in Talaingod, it was reported that the conflict resulted in an incident in which an innocent individual was affected.

Authorities said the suspects involved in carrying out the pangayaw are currently in police custody.

Despite pangayaw being recognized as a traditional practice in some indigenous communities, tribal leaders in Talaingod condemned the incident because it resulted in harm to an innocent person.

Local officials said the class suspension will remain in place as authorities continue to monitor the situation and maintain safety in the affected communities.
