A family trip to the beach in Buenavista, Quezon ended in tragedy when a 5-year-old girl died after being stung by a box jellyfish, one of the most dangerous marine species in the world.
The child was playing in the water with her aunt when she suddenly screamed in pain. Her family noticed sting marks on her arms and hands. Resort staff and family members immediately responded, providing first aid and rushing her to a nearby hospital. However, doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Authorities confirmed that the child had been stung by a box jellyfish. They noted that the rainy season often brings an increase in jellyfish sightings along Philippine coastlines.
Officials are reminding the public to be cautious when swimming at beaches, especially during cloudy weather. They recommend asking locals or resort staff about current water conditions before swimming and wearing protective swimwear when possible.
Local government units and beach resorts are also encouraged to place warning signs and educate visitors about potential marine hazards during the jellyfish season.
