Amid exhaustion and grief in Northern Cebu, residents found ways to comfort responders and volunteers helping those affected by the deadly magnitude 6.9 earthquake.
While responders worked nonstop at the Incident Command Post in Bogo City, they noticed a parked vehicle offering free snacks with a handwritten sign that read, “Free for responders.”
In Catmon town, several locals gave away bibingka and ice candy to volunteers and motorists caught in traffic on their way to quake-hit areas. Some stores offered free juice, while others allowed the use of restrooms without charge.
Along the roads, children and elderly residents held up handmade signs that read “Thank you for helping the North” and “Drive safe.”
Despite the loss and destruction caused by the September 30 earthquake, which killed at least 70 people, residents continued to show compassion and solidarity.
Their simple acts of generosity reminded many that the spirit of bayanihan remains strong in Cebu — proof that even small gestures can bring hope in the darkest moments.
