Cathay Pacific Airways is evaluating a substantial fleet renewal with a potential order for Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner and 777X aircraft. The airline aims to modernize and strengthen its commitment to sustainability. According to Bloomberg, the Hong Kong-based carrier has already initiated discussions with Boeing regarding quantities and delivery timelines for the two widebody models.
The new aircraft would replace Cathay’s aging Boeing 777-300, 777-300ER, and Airbus A330 jets, marking another step toward the airline’s goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Chief Operations and Service Delivery Officer Alex McGowan shared that Cathay is carefully reviewing the 787 Dreamliner series and the forthcoming 777X, specifically the 777-9 variant. He noted that while Boeing is a strong contender, Airbus remains in the conversation, with the A330neo, A350-900, and A350-1000 also under consideration.
Aiming for Net Zero with Modernized Fleet
This anticipated order would round out Cathay Pacific’s recent fleet updates. In August 2024, the airline ordered 30 Airbus A330neos with options for 30 more to replace its older A330-300 models. This followed a 2023 order for 32 A320neo aircraft and six A350 freighters, highlighting Cathay’s broad commitment to fleet modernization. The airline also has 22 Boeing 777-9s on order, underscoring its investment in new-generation aircraft.
Currently, Cathay Pacific’s fleet consists of 180 aircraft, including models from both Boeing and Airbus. The airline’s reliance on a hub-and-spoke model centered on Hong Kong International Airport benefits from this diverse fleet. With 15 A321neos, 43 A330-300s, 30 A350-900s, 18 A350-1000s, 17 777-300s, and 36 777-300ERs, the carrier remains well-positioned for passenger and cargo operations.
Pioneering Sustainability in Asian Aviation
Cathay Pacific is not only modernizing its fleet but also championing sustainability. As one of the first global airlines to commit to a 10% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) target by 2030, the airline has completed SAF uplifts at Hong Kong International Airport and several international hubs. Additionally, Cathay has invested in high-quality carbon offsets, operational efficiency measures, and advanced cabin products, such as the newly introduced Aria Suite for business class on its refurbished 777-300ER.
As Cathay Pacific inches closer to a final decision on its new widebody order, industry experts and passengers are watching closely to see which aircraft will power the airline’s journey toward a greener future.
