BFAR won’t stop WPS research amid harassments from China

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) stands firm in continuing its research in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) despite harassments from Chinese coast guards.

This follows the recent incident where China used water cannons and rammed their ship near Pag-asa Cays, also known as Sandy Cay.

In an interview with Brigada NewsFM Manila, BFAR spokesperson Nazario Briguera stated that this won’t deter them from their mission to conduct research.

Despite China’s harassment, their sand sampling was successful, and no one was injured, although their ship did sustain some damage.

The morale of BFAR scientists and Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) personnel remains unaffected.

Meanwhile, the Atin Ito! Coalition assured that their members and volunteers are safe and prepared for their third mission in the West Philippine Sea.

According to Akbayan President Rafaela David, they have sufficient coordination with authorities, and their mission’s success prioritizes the safety of their team members.

Their civilian-led mission will proceed on Monday, featuring a concert with local and international artists.

National Maritime Council (NMC) Usec. Alexander Lopez also assured support for the civilian mission, stating they are prepared for worst-case scenarios and have contingency measures in place.
