A minivan driven by a barangay captain plowed into a group of pedestrians late Saturday night in Minglanilla, Cebu, injuring eight people, police said.
The crash happened around 11:20 p.m. Jan. 31 in Barangay Cadulawan, according to an initial police investigation.
Authorities said the minivan was traveling along a downhill portion of the road when its brakes allegedly failed. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to plow into several pedestrians.
Police identified the driver as a barangay captain, though the name was not released in the initial report.
Eight victims suffered various injuries in the incident. Police said the youngest injured pedestrian was 14 years old, while the oldest was 45.
Officials did not immediately provide further details on the victims’ conditions, but authorities confirmed that all sustained physical injuries requiring medical attention.
The barangay captain surrendered to responding police officers shortly after the crash, investigators said.
Police added that the driver committed to covering the medical expenses of the injured pedestrians while the investigation continues.
Authorities are still examining the circumstances surrounding the reported brake malfunction and the events leading up to the collision.
The case remains under investigation as police gather additional evidence and determine whether charges will be filed.
Traffic incidents involving pedestrians remain a concern in Cebu, particularly along sloping roads where mechanical failures and loss of control can result in serious injuries.
Police reminded motorists to ensure vehicles are properly maintained, especially when traveling downhill, as investigators continue reviewing the Minglanilla incident.
