A member of the Traffic Patrol Group was killed in a multi-vehicle collision involving a passenger bus along the National Highway in Naga City, Cebu, authorities said.
Police Executive Master Sergeant Antonio Sando was declared dead on arrival at a hospital after the crash occurred around 7:45 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, 2026, in Barangay Inuboran.
Sando, a resident of Carcar City, was identified as the fatality in the incident.
The passenger bus involved in the collision was driven by Junrel, 43, a resident of Barangay Bato in Samboan, according to initial police reports.
Investigators said the bus and three other vehicles were traveling northbound, while Sando and another motorcycle rider were heading southbound on the opposite lane.
Upon reaching Barangay Inuboran, a car reportedly stopped suddenly, triggering a chain-reaction crash among vehicles behind it.
Dashcam footage reviewed by authorities showed the bus swerving to the left in an apparent attempt to avoid impact. However, the maneuver resulted in the bus entering the oncoming lane, where it collided with two motorcycles.
Sando sustained fatal injuries in the crash, while the circumstances involving the other motorcycle rider were not detailed in the initial report.
The driver of the passenger bus is now in the custody of the Naga City Police Station as the investigation continues.
Police are working to determine the full sequence of events that led to the collision, including the actions of the vehicles involved before the bus veered into opposing traffic.
Authorities have not yet released further information on possible charges as they continue gathering evidence and reviewing footage related to the incident.
The crash added to ongoing concerns over road safety along busy highway routes in Cebu, particularly involving large passenger vehicles and sudden traffic stops.
