Troops of the Philippine Army’s 36th Infantry Battalion recovered a cache of New People’s Army (NPA) weapons on July 28 after a rebel returnee revealed its location.
The operation was carried out in Sitio Dao, Barangay Pangi, under the operational control of the 901st Infantry Brigade. The cache included one M14 rifle, six empty magazines, a bandolier, and five rifle grenades.
Authorities said the breakthrough came after intelligence operations were bolstered by information from Ivy Angeles, also known as Marga, a former NPA member and wife of rebel leader Edmar Maca. Angeles surrendered earlier and is now actively helping government forces locate hidden firearms and dismantle remaining NPA support systems.
Lieutenant Colonel Joselito B. Ante Jr., commanding officer of the 36th Infantry Battalion, said the recovery was a significant step toward weakening the armed capability of NPA remnants in the province. He credited both intelligence work and the cooperation of former rebels.
“This is proof that our peace and development initiatives are working,” Ante said.
Major General Michele B. Anayron Jr., commander of the Army’s 4th Infantry Division, commended the unit for its effort. He called the recovery both a tactical success and a symbolic win in the fight for lasting peace in the Caraga region.
The investigation and recovery efforts are ongoing.
