The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT)-NCR Union asserted that the suspension of face-to-face classes is a clear indication of government negligence.
This comes after the Department of Education (DepEd) canceled in-person classes in Metro Manila today until tomorrow due to the rise in influenza-like illnesses among children.
Despite this, the Department of Health (DOH) reported that the number of cases this year is lower compared to 2024.
In a statement, the group said that whether it’s due to illness or earthquakes, class suspensions have become the government’s “go-to solution.”
They claimed this reflects neglect of the education sector.
The group described such measures as mere “band-aid solutions” that fail to address the root of the problem.
According to ACT, what’s needed are long-term solutions with sufficient funding for additional climate-resilient classrooms; more teachers and personnel to ensure manageable class sizes; and functional laboratories and health personnel in every school.
The group stressed that students and teachers deserve schools that are safe, orderly, and prepared — not repeated suspensions that highlight the government’s failure.
