Abante denies ex-Marines’ money allegations

House Committee on Human Rights Chairman and Manila Rep. Benny Abante on Tuesday denied allegations made by individuals claiming to be former members of the Philippine Marines, describing the accusations as false, baseless and malicious.

The alleged former Marines earlier released a list of individuals they claimed received suitcases of money from Zaldy Co. Abante’s name was included in the circulating claims.

In a statement, Abante said the allegations were politically motivated and linked to his stance in support of victims of extrajudicial killings. He said he was being targeted because of his position on the issue.

“I will stand by my record and my principles,” Abante said, adding that he would not be affected by what he described as fabricated attacks as he continues to push for justice.

Former members of the Makabayan Bloc also condemned an unsigned statement circulating on social media that mentioned the allegations. They described it as a desperate attempt to divert public attention from serious criminal allegations faced by former President Rodrigo Duterte before the International Criminal Court, as well as impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte.

Makabayan said its members have a clear track record of not enriching themselves in office. The group maintained that the accusations were fabricated to intimidate them and weaken public demand for truth and accountability.

It also questioned the timing of the disclosure by the alleged former Marines, saying it appeared intended to undermine ongoing investigations involving the Duterte family and portray them as politically motivated.
