NAPOLCOM chief denies ‘nagpapapogi sa media’

National Police Commission (Napolcom) Commissioner Rafael Calinisan defended himself following a heated exchange with Rizal police officer Cpl. Simeon Suan, who was relieved from his post after the controversial arrest of a senior citizen.

The incident stemmed from a viral video showing Suan arresting a 76-year-old man following a vehicular collision in Taguig.

On Wednesday, Suan was relieved from duty and placed under restrictive custody. On the same day, he faced the media, explained his side of the incident, and told Calinisan not to use him to gain publicity or “look good” in the media.

Speaking at the Kapihan ng Samahang Plaridel forum on Friday, Calinisan rejected the accusation, saying he was not trying to make himself look good.

He jokingly remarked that his mother and his 100-year-old grandmother already consider him handsome, adding that he believes he already looks good enough.

Calinisan also stressed that he has no plans to run for any public office.

He said it is the agency’s responsibility to inform the public about such incidents and the government’s response to them.

According to Calinisan, public trust must be earned every day through transparency and accountability.
