9 students, crew rescued after boat malfunction in Sarangani Bay

The Philippine Coast Guard rescued nine students and three crew members after their motorized banca suffered mechanical trouble while traveling in Sarangani Bay, authorities said.

The Philippine Coast Guard Eastern Sarangani identified the vessel as MBCA Gween. The incident happened while the students were conducting marine biology fieldwork in the bay as part of their thesis requirement.

According to the Coast Guard, the motorized banca experienced engine malfunction and sustained damage to its outrigger due to strong waves on Jan. 24, 2026.

Rescue personnel responded and safely brought all 12 individuals out of danger. No injuries were reported.

After the operation, the passengers were immediately placed under medical examination by the Glan Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office to ensure they were in good condition.

The students and crew were later transported to Glan Port along with the motorized banca.

In a separate maritime incident, the Philippine Coast Guard District Southern Tagalog also responded after a fire broke out aboard the motor yacht Allusive while it was traveling toward Punta Fuego in Nasugbu.

Authorities said the yacht’s seven crew members were safely evacuated with the help of another vessel, the motor yacht Neptimus 3.

Initial reports indicated the fire started in the engine room and was believed to have been caused by an electrical failure. No injuries were recorded.

The Coast Guard said it continues to monitor the situation for safety and any possible environmental impact.
