48 rescued after motorbanca capsizes in Laguna fluvial procession

The Philippine Coast Guard rescued 48 passengers after a motorbanca capsized during a fluvial procession held for the Feast of San Sebastian in Barangay Maytalang I, Lumban, Laguna, authorities said.

The incident happened on Jan. 25, 2026, at around 11 a.m. Devotees participating in the religious event reported that the motorbanca, identified as MBCA Vher Marie, began to list while navigating the waters off Barangay Maytalang I before it overturned.

The capsizing occurred as Coast Guard personnel were conducting maritime security operations in support of the fluvial procession.

After receiving the report, Coast Guard teams aboard vessels AB-022 and AB-014 immediately proceeded to the area. Authorities said all 48 passengers onboard the capsized motorbanca were promptly rescued.

The passengers were safely transported to the nearest riverside in Barangay Maytalang I. No casualties were reported.

The Coast Guard said it is conducting a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Officials also emphasized the importance of ensuring safety during future maritime activities, particularly during public and religious gatherings.
