85 new HIV cases recorded in General Santos City

The City Health Office (CHO) reported 85 new HIV cases from January to October 2025, underscoring the continued rise in infections among local residents.

According to surveillance data, the 15–24 age bracket remains the most vulnerable, reflecting increasing risky sexual behaviors and insufficient awareness on safe practices among the youth.

Assistant Department Head Dr. Karl Igrobay said the CHO continues to intensify education campaigns and community outreach programs to increase awareness, break stigma, and encourage early testing. He confirmed that the top mode of transmission remains sexual intercourse, especially unprotected sex.

Records show that of the 85 cases, 80 involve males while five females have also tested positive, including a pregnant woman. Health officials expressed concern over this development, stressing the need to reach women, adolescents, and expectant mothers in future interventions.

Dr. Igrobay reiterated that free HIV testing is available at the CHO for individuals willing to undergo screening. He added that the office has been actively distributing free condoms to the public to help prevent infection.

The city continues to expand its information campaigns, aiming to slow down transmission and reduce stigma surrounding HIV cases in General Santos City.
