72-Year-old grandmother killed after being hit by truck in CamSur

A 72-year-old woman was killed after being hit by a truck while crossing the road in South Centro, Sipocot town, camarines surearly Sunday morning, police said.

According to PMaj. Antonio Per Jr., acting chief of police of the Sipocot Municipal Police Station, the incident happened at about 3 a.m. on Dec. 21. The truck, driven by a 52-year-old man, was traveling along the highway toward Camarines Norte when the accident occurred.

Per said the driver failed to notice the elderly woman as she was crossing the road, resulting in her being struck and thrown by the impact. Police said visibility at the time was good and the road was well-lit.

Initial investigation showed that the driver misjudged the situation as the victim crossed the highway, police said.

Based on interviews with the victim’s relatives, authorities learned that the woman was on her way to attend Misa de Gallo when the accident happened.

The victim was rushed to the nearest hospital for medical treatment, but doctors declared her dead on arrival.

Following the incident, the truck driver voluntarily surrendered at the police station. Police said the driver is willing to face charges to be filed by the victim’s family.

Authorities did not release the identity of the victim pending further coordination with her relatives.

Police said the case remains under investigation as they prepare the necessary documentation related to the incident.

The Sipocot police reiterated their call for motorists to remain cautious, especially during the early morning hours, and for pedestrians to take extra care when crossing major roads, particularly during the holiday season when traffic movement increases.

The incident adds to the list of road accidents reported in the province as residents travel early for religious activities ahead of Christmas.
