Three suspected members of the New People’s Army (NPA) were killed in a clash with government troops early morning on April 18.
According to a report from the 42nd Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army, soldiers encountered the rebel group around 5:30 a.m. in Barangay Sagrada, Iriga City.
The military said they received intelligence that the NPA members were conducting extortion activities in the area, prompting the launch of a security operation.
A gunfight ensued between the soldiers and an estimated 10 rebels, lasting approximately 20 minutes. Three rebels were killed, while another was captured during the exchange.
The identities of the deceased have not yet been confirmed. Authorities recovered one M16 rifle, one M14 rifle, an R4A3 rifle, and various personal items from the encounter site.
The 42nd Infantry Battalion continues to maintain heightened security operations in the region throughout Holy Week to prevent further incidents and ensure public safety.
No casualties were reported on the side of government forces.
Military officials emphasized that the successful operation was a result of timely intelligence and coordination. They also reiterated the government’s call for remaining insurgents to surrender and return to mainstream society.
As of this writing, authorities are continuing to investigate the area and monitor for any additional threats. Further details, including the identities of the killed and captured individuals, are expected to be released pending verification.
