Shoemaker found dead in Gensan sewer

A 37-year-old man was found dead in a drainage canal in Purok DBP Homes, Phase I, Barangay San Isidro, General Santos City, at around 4 p.m. on July 7.

The victim was identified as Josefino Barbero Jr., a part-time shoemaker. His body was discovered by local resident Benito Dumantay, who was fishing for catfish nearby. Dumantay said he noticed a strong odor from the drainage and, upon checking, saw a body floating in the water.

Police were immediately called to the scene and confirmed the presence of a man’s body, partially hidden under leaves and wood debris.

Investigators later identified the victim and noted his occupation as a shoemaker. No external injuries or signs of foul play were reported.

Barbero’s sister, Joy, said she believes her brother may have suffered an epileptic seizure while near the canal, causing him to fall in and drown.

She added that Josefino had a history of epilepsy and had previously collapsed from seizures, especially when stressed or hungry. She recalled a past incident where he fainted at a gymnasium in Lagao and was saved by police officers.

Authorities are continuing the investigation to determine the exact cause of death.
