Woman killed by van in GenSan after trying to save injured dog

A local government employee from Glan, Sarangani died late Tuesday night after being struck by a van while attempting to rescue an injured dog along a highway in General Santos City.

The incident occurred around 11 p.m. near a cemetery along the National Highway in Barangay Apopong. The victim was identified as Nimesia Gavica, 56, a resident of Foremost Village and a known pet lover.

According to General Santos City Traffic Enforcement Unit, Gavica was riding her motorcycle when she saw an injured dog lying in the middle of the road. She reportedly stopped to help and approached the dog.

While bent over to pick up the animal, she was hit by an oncoming van. The impact threw her to the pavement, where she sustained fatal injuries. Gavica died on the spot.

The front portion of the van was also damaged in the collision. Authorities confirmed that the vehicle is currently impounded by the Traffic Enforcement Unit for investigation.

Police added that a settlement has been reached between the driver and the victim’s family, with monetary assistance provided.

Gavica’s act of compassion has drawn sympathy and sadness from the local community, who described her as a kind-hearted woman committed to both public service and animal welfare.
