VP Sara links Senate leadership row to administration

Vice President Sara Duterte said the ongoing leadership dispute in the Senate reflects the leadership style of the current administration.

Speaking during an interview in General Santos City, Duterte said the confusion and lack of direction being seen in the country mirrors what she described as the leadership situation in Malacañang.

According to the vice president, people generally follow the direction set by their leaders. She said that when leadership lacks direction and vision, individuals tend to act independently, resulting in disorder.

Duterte added that the situation is not limited to the Senate but can also be observed throughout the country.

The vice president also urged senators to resolve their differences through dialogue. She said all 24 members of the Senate should participate in discussions regarding the institution’s priorities and constitutional responsibilities.

Duterte stressed that senators belong to a single institution and should avoid being divided into opposing groups.

She specifically mentioned that discussions should include all senators, including those who are currently unable to attend Senate proceedings.

Despite commenting on the political situation, Duterte declined to provide a legal opinion on who should be recognized as the legitimate Senate President.

She also refused to comment on whether the quorum formed during a recent Senate session was valid, including questions surrounding the election of Sen. Win Gatchalian as Senate President Pro Tempore.

Instead, Duterte said she would leave the matter to the Supreme Court.

According to the vice president, the high court should make the final determination on the Senate leadership issue and decide how the matter will move forward.
