VP Sara Duterte urges cooperation with China amid maritime dispute

As the Philippines and China mark 50 years of diplomatic relations, Vice President Sara Duterte expressed optimism for stronger cooperation despite rising tensions in the West Philippine Sea.

Speaking at the commemoration event, Duterte acknowledged the significance of 2025 as a milestone year for both nations. She cited the challenges they face, including China’s continued presence in the Philippines’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), exemplified by the so-called “Monster Ship.”

She likened 2025, the Year of the Wood Snake in the Chinese Zodiac, to qualities such as wisdom, resilience, and adaptability. These traits, she noted, could guide both nations toward fostering mutual understanding and cooperation.

Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Huang Xilian echoed Duterte’s sentiments, emphasizing a desire for a stronger and more stable friendship between the two nations. Huang remarked that the historical relationship between China and the Philippines continues to evolve amid ongoing challenges.

However, maritime tensions remain a contentious issue. The persistent presence of China’s vessels in the West Philippine Sea has drawn criticism from the Philippine government and the international community. As both nations reflect on five decades of relations, the balance between partnership and sovereignty remains a critical concern.
