UCLA triumphs over Iowa in thrilling 20-17 win as Garbers, Schwesinger lead the charge

UCLA clinched its third consecutive win Thursday night, narrowly defeating Iowa 20-17 in a thrilling Big Ten clash. Quarterback Ethan Garbers threw two key touchdowns, while linebacker Carson Schwesinger anchored the defense with two crucial interceptions, thwarting Iowa’s offense throughout the game.

Garbers powered UCLA’s offense, completing 21 34 passes for 204 yards. Despite two first-half interceptions that handed Iowa an early 10-point advantage, Garbers rebounded, guiding the Bruins to seize control by halftime. His 29-yard touchdown pass to Logan Loya just before the break gave UCLA a 17-10 lead, showcasing his resilience and tenacity on the field.

Schwesinger and Harden Shine for UCLA

Running back T.J. Harden made a significant impact, rushing for 125 yards on 20 carries, marking his first 100-yard game of the season. Schwesinger, who leads the Big Ten in tackles, helped contain Iowa’s star running back, Kaleb Johnson, limiting him to a season-low 49 yards on 18 carries. Schwesinger’s interceptions were instrumental, setting up scoring opportunities and keeping Iowa at bay.

Iowa’s Brendan Sullivan left the game after a third-quarter hit by UCLA’s Oluwafemi Oladejo, forcing backup quarterback Jackson Stratton into action. Stratton led Iowa on a 13-play drive, ending with a Kamari Moulton touchdown to tie the game at 17-17, adding tension in the final quarter.

Bhaghani’s Field Goal Clinches the Victory

With less than five minutes left, UCLA kicker Mateen Bhaghani sealed the win with a 27-yard field goal, following up on an earlier 57-yarder, the second-longest in school history. Bhaghani’s clutch performance gave UCLA the edge, as Iowa could not respond in the remaining minutes.

UCLA’s victory improved their record to 4-5, 3-4 in Big Ten play, while Iowa dropped to 6-4 overall. The Bruins’ performance highlighted their balanced offense and defense, signaling momentum as they head into their next game against Brooklyn.
