Four members of a family were killed and another was seriously wounded after they were ambushed by unidentified gunmen in Barangay New Abra, Matalam town, Cotabato, police said.
The attack happened at about 6 p.m. on Jan. 29, 2026, in Sitio New Esrael, Purok 6, according to the Matalam Municipal Police Station.
Police identified those who died at the scene as Rashid Sahay Mampo, 20; Rica Jane Maidlos, 16; Daryl Mampo Diansay, 12; and Russel Kim Mampo Diansay, 11. All were residents of the barangay.
A 14-year-old relative, Ebrahim, was wounded and is being treated at the Amas Provincial Hospital, authorities said.
Initial investigation showed the victims had gone to the home of a relative, identified as Eddie Belandres, to use a Wi-Fi connection. Police said the family was on its way home when armed men suddenly opened fire.
Investigators said the suspects, whose number has not yet been determined, allegedly used high-powered firearms. The victims were hit multiple times, resulting in four deaths at the scene.
After the shooting, the gunmen fled toward an unknown direction, police said.
Police Lt. Col. Arniel Melocotones is leading the investigation, while authorities have launched a manhunt operation to identify and arrest those responsible.
Relatives of the victims have called for justice, particularly for the minors who were among those killed. Barangay officials and law enforcement authorities condemned the incident.
Police have not yet released information on the possible motive behind the attack as the investigation continues.
Authorities urged anyone with information related to the shooting to coordinate with local police to help bring the perpetrators to justice.
