Taxi driver found dead in Cebu; robbery eyed in early morning shooting

A taxi driver was found dead with gunshot wounds inside his vehicle early Wednesday morning, July 2, in Sitio Ka Isko, Barangay Mactan, Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu.

The victim was identified as Johny Burdas, 47, a resident of Barangay Bankal. He was discovered lifeless and bloodied in the driver’s seat of his taxi at around 6:00 a.m.

According to information gathered by Brigada News FM Cebu, nearby residents reported hearing gunshots around 2:00 a.m. that same morning. CCTV footage later revealed the taxi passing in front of a local eatery at around 1:22 a.m., heading toward the direction where the body was later found.

Eight minutes after passing the eatery, the taxi was seen moving toward Sitio Ka Isko. Ten minutes later, its lights reportedly went off.

Initial investigation by the Lapu-Lapu City Police showed that the victim sustained gunshot wounds to the head and shoulder. Two spent shells from a .45 caliber firearm were recovered at the crime scene.

Authorities are currently investigating robbery as a possible motive, noting that Burdas’s wallet, cellphone, and earnings were missing from the taxi.

Police have yet to identify any suspects, and the investigation remains ongoing. They are reviewing additional CCTV footage and gathering witness accounts to piece together the timeline of events leading to the fatal shooting.

Law enforcement continues to urge the public to report any relevant information that could help solve the case.
