Bystanders scramble for cover as exchange of gunfire wounds 4 in Himamaylan City

Children and other bystanders scrambled for cover as gunfire erupted beside a roadside shelter in Himamaylan City, wounding two soldiers, a militiaman, and a civilian in an attack blamed on suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels at 8:40 pm on Saturday night, October 17.

The wounded were two Philippine Army personnel identified by the aliases Jojo and Marty, a member of the Citizens Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) identified as Joe, and a civilian identified as John, according to the police.

The shooting occurred in Sitio Bulod, Barangay Carabalan, along a road leading to the ongoing construction of the Himamaylan-Tayasan road, about nine kilometers from Carabalan proper.

A resident who requested anonymity told Brigada News FM Philippines on Monday, October 19, that a child among a group using a nearby peso-net heard unusual noises from a sugarcane field shortly before the shooting.

The child had reportedly stepped outside to urinate beside the road, facing a sugarcane field about eight (8) feet above road level.

Upon returning, the child told the peso-net owner, “May nagakalas sa tubo,” describing noises that suggested movement among the sugarcane stalks.

According to the resident, the sounds came from the same area where the gunfire later originated.

The shooting reportedly followed minutes after the child mentioned the noises.

The residents said that the soldiers were sheltering in a roadside structure intended to be used as an eatery, when the military were attacked.

They added that the government troops were staying in the area for three consecutive days, allegedly waiting for two comrades who had left to attend to an important matter.

Caught in the crossfire

John had been preparing to go home when soldiers called him into the structure for a casual conversation.

His parents said that their son and the military were talking as friends before the attack.

When the gunfire erupted, children and other bystanders ducked for cover.

The residents said the soldiers took nearly five minutes to respond before returning fire, triggering an exchange of gunfire.

They added that a jeepney parked outside the structure also sustained gunshots, and stood between the soldiers and the attackers, potentially shielding the troops from incoming bullets.

Police said Jojo sustained a gunshot wound to the right side of his head, while Marty was hit in the abdomen. Joe, the CAFGU member, suffered injuries to his right arm and fingers. All three government personnel were reported to be in stable condition.

John sustained a gunshot wound to his lower right thigh and was scheduled to undergo surgery. All four victims were brought to Holy Mother of Mercy Hospital in Kabankalan City.

While receiving treatment, John questioned why he had been shot despite having no involvement in the conflict.

“Wala man ako sala sa ila, ngaa amo na gin himo sa akon?” he said, calling for justice. He also praised the 94th Infantry Battalion troops for helping residents in Barangay Carabalan.

Other side of the story

In a statement, the 303rd Infantry Brigade said troops from the 94th Infantry Battalion were conducting a security patrol when they encountered suspected remnants of the NPA’s Central Negros 2 under the Komiteng Rehiyon-Negros.

The military said the firefight lasted about five minutes.

Brigada commander Ted Dumosmog condemned the attack, saying it endangered government personnel and an innocent civilian. It vowed to continue pursuit operations until those responsible were brought to justice.*
