Tulfo seeks persona non grata move against Chinese Ambassador Jing Quan

Sen. Erwin Tulfo has filed Proposed Senate Resolution No. 739, urging the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to recommend declaring Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Jing Quan persona non grata.

The resolution was filed in the Senate on Oct. 19 following controversy over Jing’s “we may easily win” remark.

In an ambush interview, Tulfo said the Chinese ambassador should tone down his statements because he represents China, its people and its leaders.

Tulfo also said he had no plans to travel to China, Hong Kong, Macau or any of their territories.

He added that Jing should consider returning to China before Philippine authorities formally declare him persona non grata.

The proposal comes amid tensions following the ambassador’s controversial remark, which drew attention to diplomatic relations between Manila and Beijing.

China previously warned that it could bar additional Philippine officials from entering its territory if the Philippines declares Jing persona non grata.

The resolution seeks to encourage the DFA to recommend the diplomatic measure. However, filing the resolution does not mean that Jing has been declared persona non grata.

The issue places the proposed action against the ambassador alongside China’s warning of possible entry restrictions on more Philippine officials.

No further details about the resolution’s status were provided in the supplied report.
